A little look-back at what made us smile in Switzerland last year
In a flash the 2016 Gstaad Major was over. No sooner had we arrived we were already packing our bags. Time flies when you’re having fun.
Just like in 2015, the gold medals and champions cowbells belonged to Brazil, but what made us sit-up and take notice during our week in the breathtaking Swiss Alps?
Well, here are our top five tales of yet another magnificent week in the mountains.
It’s not often Center Court rises to its feet to salute a beach volleyball player after a defeat – but that’s exactly what happened to Swiss hero Philip Gabathuler after he announced that the 2016 tournament would be his last. It’s fair to say it all got a bit emotional.
Simone Sittig and Luciana Pierangeli brightened up our Snapchat channel (it’s @SwatchMajors, by the way – get following), after they lost in the women’s qualification round. And the South Africans were also more than happy to tell us their tale of living the dream on the World Tour as part of their plan to give back to those people less fortunate back home.
It was beach volleyball but not as you know it. On the mountainside, watched by a cow called Anika, Anouk Vergé-Dépré and Isabelle Forrer and Karla Borger and Britta Büthe played beach volleyball. No, really. They did.
It’s a long way from the Copacabana to Gstaad, but Brazil once again proved they can’t get enough of the alpine air. After winning both gold medals in 2015 the Brazilians were at it again last summer following superb performances from Larissa/Talita and Evandro/Pedro Solberg.
The realization that the Olympic Games in Rio were almost upon us became even more apparent when we had the privilege of hosting the pool draw for the Olympics. It was a special event that we were proud to be a part of, and made the competing players comprehend their achievements of making it.
So there we have it! Gstaad Major 2016...and we can't wait to find out what we'll have in store this summer! Bring it on!
