We say goodbye to Gstaad for another year
There’s a strange, weird feeling in the Swatch Major Series office today. Why? Well, because there’s no beach volleyball matches on for us to watch!
Yes, after back-to-back weeks of the best beach volleyball, following the successes of the Poreč Major and then the Gstaad Major, there is a big, round, Mikasa-shaped void in our lives without the greatest game on sand.
HOWEVER! What a fortnight it’s been and it was with a heavy heart that we left Gstaad on Sunday after another truly epic week’s entertainment in the gorgeous Swiss Alps. Kerri Walsh Jennings says it’s her favorite tournament. And who are we to argue?
On Sunday the Gstaad Major came to its conclusion and it did so in style with Brazil making a clean sweep of gold medals as Evandro and Pedro Solberg followed in the footsteps of their women counterparts Larissa/Talita to top the podium. Stat alert: did you know it was the 56th time in FIVB history that’s happened? It’s an ominous sign for the Olympics…talking of which…
We also had the honor last week of hosting the draw for the Olympic Pools in Gstaad – a special occasion that we will not forget quickly. You can read up on who drew who by clicking here.
So, although there are no digs and dives and serves and spikes today to get the blood pumping, fear not, dear beach volleyball fan. In two weeks’ time we’re heading to the world capital of beach volleyball: Klagenfurt! And you can be rest assured that this annual pilgrimage to the mecca of our sport will be bigger, brighter, noisier and crazier than ever!
But thank you Gstaad, thank you Anika, thank you volunteers, thank you players and thank YOU, the fans!
What a week…see you next year, Gstaad – we can’t wait to hear the cowbells ringing again!
