Latvians lap up another medal
Aleksandrs Samoilovs wanted a cowbell and now he’s got one after an epic bronze medal match.
Okay, it isn’t the champions’ one, but more precious metal is leaving for Latvia as the Lion King and teammate Janis Smedins secured yet another podium finish by winning bronze at the Gstaad Major.
The duo have had a real taste for medals lately, winning the Olsztyn Grand Slam last month, and that hunger helped them here in the Swiss Alps as they won their third medal in their last six tournaments. And that’s a record that would be the envy of the beach volleyball elite.
A year ago they won silver here in Gstaad but bronze and another cowbell will be more than welcome back home after a dramatic match against Spain’s Herrera/Gavira.
The Latvians won the first set comfortably but in an incredible second set Samoilovs/Smedins unbelievably wasted nine match points. The Spaniards failed to take five set points themselves in a bid to take it to a decider but the Latvians eventually got the job winning a thriller 34-32.
Congratulations guys – see you on the podium after the final!
