Americans battle back to deny Germans stunning semifinal
Comeback queens Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross aim to use the momentum from their epic semifinal triumph in today’s Gstaad Major final against Brazil’s Larissa/Talita.
The Americans looked dead and buried in the second set against smart Major Hamburg winners Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst – who had four match points to book a place in the final.
But Walsh Jennings is not a three-time Olympic champion for nothing, and together with Ross, the number two seeds in the tournament stormed back to win the deciding set in which they led all the way.
“I can’t wait to take all the courage and motivation from this semifinal win into the final and to play big,” Kerri told us afterwards.
“We were 20-17 down to lose the match and we came together and dug deep and that makes me so proud.
“When you get to crucial moments you have a choice: to either resign yourself to what might happen or to make yourselves confident and we had the confidence.
“We let ourselves go a bit but we said we’re not going down without a fight and we fought. They started making mistakes and we gained momentum in the third set. Then we had new life.”
The Americans meet Larissa/Talita in a mouthwatering final on Center Court at 16:05 CET later today following the Brazilians’ straight sets victory over the Netherlands’ Meppelink/Van Iersel.
The Dutch girls had no answer to the South Americans who are now eyeing back-to-back Gstaad Major titles.
