Ludwig/Walkenhorst end underdogs run in Gstaad
Poreč Major gold medalists Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude’s climb up the mountain towards another gold came to an end on Friday as fellow Germans Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst strode into their third successive Swatch Major Series semifinal.
smart Major Hamburg winners Ludwig/Walkenhorst missed out on a medal in Croatia last week but reached their fifth semifinal in a row by beating Laboureur/Sude in straight sets.
Their prize for securing another last four place in the Gstaad Major is a mouthwatering semifinal against American superstars Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross. The US team, who had to forfeit here 12 months ago, love this tournament and they made light work of beating Germans Holtwick/Semmler in their quarterfinal.
Walsh Jennings/Ross could not be joined by fellow Americans in the semifinals, however, as Sweat/Fendrick lost in a three-set fight against the Netherlands’ Meppelink/Van Iersel.
The Dutch duo will be underdogs on Saturday, though, as they go head-to-head with reigning Gstaad Major champions Larissa/Talita.
The quartet will be aiming for a place in the final which takes place on Center Court at 16:00 CET. The bronze medal match will kick off an hour before.
