All-American and all-German matches highlight in Gstaad
“Bring it on!” were the words of American qualifiers Lane Carico and Summer Ross as their win over Swiss favorites Forrer/Vergé-Dépré booked an all-American last 16 match with Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross.
On a sun-drenched Center Court, the Americans fought back to silence the home crowd. Forrer/Vergé-Dépré took the first set and at that point it looked as though the Olympic-bound Swiss partnership were on their way to victory.
But the Americans won two crucial points following two extraordinary rallies late in the second set to level the score before going on to comfortably take the final set 15-10.
“We love playing Kerri and April and we can’t wait!” said Summer.
The duo will be underdogs in the match with Walsh Jennings/Ross having won three of the last four meetings.
That’s not the only mouthwatering derby in the last 16. Arguably one of the biggest matches will be the all-German meeting between the gold and bronze medalists at the Poreč Major, as Laboureur/Sude take on Borger/Büthe in a repeat of last week's semifinal.
Forrer/Vergé-Dépré’s exit means the Swiss challenge in the women’s tournament is over but the three remaining men’s teams from Switzerland complete their Pool Play matches today.
