Swiss youngsters eye home tournament
Young Swiss team Tanja Hüberli and Nina Betschart were millimeters away from a place in the last 16 – but despite their exit from the Gstaad Major they can’t wait to come back.
Against last year’s bronze medal winners Pavan/Bansley from Canada, the hosts spurned four match points – including a block that landed just the wrong side of the line – in a riveting second set before bowing out in a close third set.
And after their disappointment, Tanja told us of her dream to one day lift the champions’ cowbell on Swiss sand.
“It’s difficult to take right now,” she said. “We would love to play in front of this crowd again. It’s important for Swiss teams to go far in this tournament but, tomorrow, I’m sure the disappointment will turn into pride.
“It’s definitely a dream to win the cowbell once. The first time I saw this trophy I told my partner this was one of my biggest goals in life to achieve.
“In front of your friends and family and the home crowd I am sure it is one of the biggest feelings.”
