Nine hours of action on a thrilling Thursday
Good morning from the mountains – yes it’s day three of the Gstaad Major and the big boys join the party today!
It’s the start of the Pool Play for the men and yesterday’s main draw pits 32 of the best teams in the world together high in the Swiss Alps.
Reigning Gstaad Major champions Alison/Bruno are number one seeds and they kick off the defense of their title with the first match on Center Court against Swiss qualifiers Kissling/Krattiger. Also in Pool A are Italians Ranghieri/Carambula – who finished fourth here 12 months ago.
Teams aiming to turn precious metal into gold are last year’s silver and bronze medalists, Samoilovs/Smedins of Latvia and the Dutch duo Brouwer/Meeuwsen. Both teams face tricky opponents in the Pool Play – so can they come through it?
Last week’s Poreč Major silver medalists, Austria’s Doppler/Horst, have been drawn in Pool G in which they face Spain’s Herrera/Gavira who they toppled in the last 16 in Croatia.
There are also some familiar faces back in action. Italians Lupo/Nicolai did not feature at the Poreč Major, but last year’s Gstaad Major quarterfinalists and this year’s European champs return to Switzerland and face a favorable draw in Pool H – including country quota lucky losers the Crabb brothers of the United States.
Also today the women’s Pool Play comes to its dramatic conclusion, as we cram in an incredible 48 matches into nine hours of what promises to be a typically enthralling day on the beach here in the mountains!
