Last chance saloon for Rio hopes
Here in Gstaad we’re enjoying alpine life and looking forward to Saturday’s draw for the Olympic Games.
There are 33 Olympic teams playing here in Gstaad, and of course it’s a very, very big deal – but while the crème de la crème of beach volleyball stars battle it out for the golden cowbell, there is more at stake for 19 teams in Sochi for this week’s Continental Cup Final.
The final two tickets for the Copacabana will be decided this week in Russia after the continental federations completed their own qualifying tournaments in the week leading up to our Poreč Major.
But this week there will be no second chances – only two nations will be able to fly to Brazil to join the other teams and countries who will be in Rio de Janeiro in August.
The Continental Cup Final kicked off today with the first Pool Play matches – with 10 men’s and nine women’s teams will vying for a place in Rio.
Men’s teams from Belgium, Canada, China, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Mexico, Russia, Sierra Leone, Uruguay and Venezeula are in action; while for the women, Austria, China, Columbia, Czech Republic, Mexico, Paraguay, Russia, Ukraine and Vanauatu a eye that one final place.
In between hopping from court to court here in sunny Switzerland, we’ll be keeping half an eye on the drama unfolding in Sochi.
And then we can look forward to Saturday’s exciting draw. To say we’re privileged to be hosting it here in Gstaad is an understatement! Good luck to everyone involved!
