Things can only get better for the hosts
The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the crowd inside the Gstaadium are happy…what could possibly go wrong?
Well, all four Swiss women’s teams losing on Center Court – that’s what!
The women’s main draw at the Gstaad Major kicked off in beautiful weather in Switzerland, it was just a shame that the host teams could not give their fans reasons to cheer.
In the opening match Eiholzer/Gerson were beaten by Germans Holtwick/Semmler.
But hopes were high for up-and-coming team Betschart/Hüberli – the young pair have reached the quarterfinals in their last two tournaments, including at the Poreč Major last week – but they could not beat Italians Menegatti/Orsi Toth.
Two Olympic teams then went head-to-head in the third match on Center Court but, once again, luck deserted the Swiss. Heidrich/Zumkehr took the first set against Wang/Yue but the Chinese team fought back to claim a 2-1 victory.
Despite the roars of support from the home crowd they could not encourage Forrer/Vergé-Dépré to victory either. In another closely fought encounter, the Swiss lost out to Finland’s Lehtonen/Lahti.
Now all of the women have tasted their first action in the Pool Play and there were two eye-opening results and the Swiss teams will be aiming to improve later today.
As we pointed out in our article this morning, the American derby between Walsh Jennings/Ross and Fendrick/Sweat saw Brooke and Lauren come out on top on Court 4.
And another team heading for the Olympics lost: Canadians Broder/Valjas were defeated by new kids on the block from Holland – Daalderdop/Stubbe. Next up for the Dutch team? Larissa/Talita! Good luck girls!
