Can Brazil be stopped in Gstaad?

Swiss ready to unlock their potential on home sand

We might be in Poreč awaiting the start of our second summer spectacular in Croatia, but did you know it’s just 10 days until we make the pilgrimage to Gstaad?

Preparation is already well under away at the magnificent Alpine location and all eyes will be on the tournament in more ways than one with the dramatic draw for the Olympic Games also taking place.

Once the sand has settled on next week’s Poreč Major finals attention will immediately turn to the Gstaad Major and the world’s best beach volleyball players will hot-foot it from the sea to the mountains. How’s that for a contrast?

While the players will not get too carried away and “take every game as it comes” we can’t help but get excited about setting up amid the lush Swiss countryside.

The big question this year in one of Switzerland’s most glamorous locations is: can the Brazilians be stopped?

Twelve months ago Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt reigned supreme following an epic final against Latvians Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins.

It was the same story in the women’s competition in an all-Brazilian final that saw Larissa/Talita see off the challenge of Taiana Lima and Fernanda Alves.

It’s clear that Brazil have a liking for the Swiss mountains but will they be able to acclimatize for a second year in succession?

The home fans will be desperate to cheer on their heroes to victory, too. Last year three Swiss teams gallantly exited their home tournament in the first knockout stage.

However, there will be big hopes that Switzerland’s top two women’s teams – Nadine Zumkehr and Joana Heidrich and Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé Dépré – can go all the way this year! And with both partnerships in the hat for the Olympic draw it promises to be an extra special year for the Swiss army!

The best way to keep up-to-date with the Gstaad Major is by following our social media accounts and, if you’re joining us in the Alps, why not click ‘going’ on our Facebook event.
