Vikings century sets-up another final

100th World Tour win for Anders and Christian secures back-to-back final in the Alps

Anders Mol and Christian Sørum are at it again. For the second year running the Vikings are in a Swatch Major Gstaad final.

And what’s more the pair secured their spot in today’s gold medal match by winning their 100th match on the World Tour together.

Their straight sets win over Brazilians Evandro Gonçalves and Bruno Oscar Schmidt further strengthened their credentials as the best beach volleyball team on the planet.

And the World Championship bronze medalists are now eyeing back-to-back golden cowbells.

“One hundred wins makes me feel old,” laughed Anders. “But now we want to go for win 101.

“This is one of our favorite tournaments and we’re so happy to have reached another final. The place reminds me of home.

“We were honored to win a golden cowbell last year and now we want another one.”

Anders and Christian will need to get past Alex Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen after the Dutchmen booked their first appearance in a Major Series final since Hamburg 2016 and their first in a World Tour event since May 2018.

The pair beat Italians Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai 21-17, 21-15 on the Center Court.

It was a far cry from the two teams’ previous meeting, which was the first match of the pool play on Wednesday, that the Italians won easily in straight sets.

The Dutch duo have since battled their way to final, winning a must-win elimination match in three sets, beating Andre/George and Lucena/Dalhausser before they edged another three-set epic against Perusic/Schweiner.

“We weren’t happy how we played at all after the first match,” admitted Meeuwsen. “We talked about it, we wanted to show a different way of playing and in the end that’s what we executed. We’ve done that ever since so it makes it being in the final much sweeter because of how we have done.”

The gold medal match takes place at 6.30pm CEST and you can watch the game live on BeachStream.
