Swiss dreams are made of these

11.07.2019 - Gstaad

Can Hüberli/Betschart end the home nation’s wait for a golden cowbell?

The Swiss fans have waited a long time to see one of their own claim gold on the sand in Gstaad.

Could this be the year that run comes to an end and a team from Switzerland stands on top of the podium?

Well, Tanja Hüberli and Nina Betschart are doing everything they can to do just that.

The pair arrived at their home tournament after a sensational run to the semi-finals of the World Championships. In Hamburg they had a match point to reach the final but couldn’t take it. They would go on to lose the bronze medal match, but a fourth place in the biggest tournament of their careers was no disgrace.

Now, perhaps, perhaps, perhaps Tanja and Nina could be the team to finally put a Swiss team on top of the podium.

Two wins out of two in the pool play has catapulted the top seeds into the Last 16, their latest win over Italians Marta Menegatti and Viktoria Orsi Toth 21-18, 21-16 an impressive performance of defense and attack.

There were bucket-loads of tears after the pair lost that epic semi-final to the eventual champions, Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan, but some Sunday there could be tears again and this time they might not be of disappointment.

Switzerland women have one just one medal in the history of beach volleyball in Gstaad. Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr won bronze in 2012. If there was ever a time to put a stop to that it would be now.

The pair will return to the Center Court and will have the fans with them on Friday when they aim to book their place in Saturday’s quarter-finals.
