11.07.2019 - Gstaad, Switzerland
Six-time Swatch Major Gstaad champion Kerri Walsh Jennings is off to a good start in the Swiss Alps again as her and partner Brooke Sweat finished on top of Pool G during the second day of the women’s tournament.
The Americans secured their second-straight two-set victory in the event as they overcame young Latvians Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka 21-19, 21-12 in a sidecourt match at the Swiss Alps village and are now guaranteed a spot in the Round of 16.
Another team to top its pool is the one of Rebecca Cavalcanti and Ana Patrícia Ramos. The young Brazilians finished first on Pool E after they posted a 21-13, 21-17 victory over Germans Sandra Ittlinger and Chantal Laboureur.
The session matches also resulted in the elimination of three European teams, most notably the home duo of Laura Caluori and Dunja Gerson. The Swiss, who pushed world champions Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes to three sets on their debut, didn’t bring the same intensity to their second match and were defeated 15-21, 21-16, 15-13 to Slovakia’s Natalia Dubovcova and Andrea Strbova.
The other teams who's participation in the tournament ended were Finland’s Taru Lathi/Anniina Pakkinen, who lost to Brazil’s Talita Antunes/Taiana Lima 22-20, 21-14, and Austria’s Katharina Schützenhöfer/Lena Plesiutsching, who were beat by Russia’s Ekaterina Birlova/Evgenia Ukolova 21-12, 19-21, 15-6.
Pool play concludes for the women later on Thursday with the definitions of winners for Pools A, between Switzerland’s Nina Betschart/Tanja Hüberli and Italy’s Marta Menegatti/Viktoria Orsi Toth, and B, which will reunite Pavan/Humana-Paredes and Brazil’s Carol Salgado/Maria Elisa Antonelli.
