Alison and Álvaro down world champions

10.07.2019 - Gstaad

The Brazilians topped Stoyanovskiy and Krasilnikov to dominate Pool B

Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Viacheslav Krasilnikov’s celebrations for their recent World Championships title didn’t last long as the Russians were upset by Brazil’s Alison Cerutti and Álvaro Filho in their second match at the Swatch Major Gstaad.

The Brazilians came from behind to post a 14-21, 22-20, 15-12 win over the Russians at the Red Bull Beach Arena that secured them the first-place of Pool B and a spot in the Round of 16 in the Swiss Alps. Stoyanovskiy and Krasilnikov were second and will play in the Round of 24.

“They’re playing really well and are in great form after they won the World Championships last week,” Álvaro said. “But I think we had a very good side out game and Alison’s block made the difference in the end.”

Evandro Gonçalves and Bruno Schmidt were other Brazilian team to finish first as they came out on top of the all-Brazilian Pool F decider when they ousted André Loyola and George Wanderley 21-17, 21-19. This, however, wasn’t the only national match-up to determine pool winners in Gstaad as Americans Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena triumphed 21-19, 21-16 over compatriots Jake Gibb and Taylor Crabb to top Pool D.

Reigning Gstaad Major champions Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway won Pool A following their 19-21, 21-19, 15-10 victory over Russia’s Nikita Liamin and Taras Myskiv. Pool E’s winners were Polish Grzegorz Fijalek and Michal Bryl, who defeated Italian Olympic silver medalists Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai 21-14, 21-16.

Qatar’s Cherif Samba and Ahmed Tijan dominated Pool C after a 23-21, 19-21, 15-13 triumph over Russia’s Konstantin Semenov and Ilya Leshukov and Canadians Sam Pedlow and Sam Schachter won Pool G as they upset Spain’s Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira 18-21, 21-13, 15-12.
