Winning start for World Champs

Russians begin cowbell quest with victory

Three days after being crowned World Champions, Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovskiy got their Swatch Major Gstaad campaign off to a winning start.

And just like they did in Hamburg, the Russians silenced the home crowd, taking down Swiss pair Marco Krattiger and Nico Beeler in straight sets on the Center Court to book themselves a place in the elimination phase.

Oleg and Slav weren’t the only champions enjoying their morning in the mountains.

Last year’s Gstaad gold medalists, Anders Mol and Christian Sørum got the defense of their title off to a winning start and now they’ve set their sights on capturing their second cowbell.

It was their victory here in the mountains 12 months ago that kick-started their winning streak and their climb to the top of the world rankings in the space of six weeks.

And their straight sets win over Swiss pair Yves Haussener and Quentin Metral ensured the bronze medalists from Hamburg are assured of a spot in the elimination phase already.

“It’s great to be back, it brings so many memories of playing on the Center Court and we want to bring another cowbell back to Norway,” said Anders. “It feels like home. The vibe, the environment, the fresh air; in many ways it is a bit like Norway. It’s a small town, like where I am from, so I feel so at home here.

“It was a fun match, too. I know Yves very well, having been on some training camps in Switzerland with him so it was nice to play against him here.”

The Vikings will now face Nikita Liamin and Taras Myskiv for the right to advance to the second elimination stage, while the Swiss take on Czechs Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner in a bid to stay in the tournament.

In the men’s Pool D three American teams are fighting to get through. In the first all-American face-off, Nick Lucena and Phil Dalhausser eased to a 2-0 win over Casey Patterson and Chase Budinger. In the other match, Jake Gibb and Taylor Crabb beat Latvians Martins Plavins and Edgars Tocs.
