08.07.2019 - Gstaad
Gstaad is everyone’s favorite tournament. How can you tell? Just look at the quali. Just look at the names in there!
This is five-star stuff now, the first Major of the season. It’s enticed the beach elite to the mountains for what promises to be another intense medal chase just days after the world championships finished in Hamburg.
Answer this: When were both Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins and Martins Plavins and Edgars Tocs in the same quali together? That’s a question we’re putting out there because we honestly don’t know.
The Latvians are joined in the race for the main draw alongside the likes of Ben Saxton and Grant O’Gorman. You know, those Canadians who like Tocs and Plavins, finished ninth at the World Championships. Same goes for fellow Hamburg ninth-placers Nikita Liamin and Taras Myskiv and Rob Seidl and Phil Waller.
Look further down the list. We dare you.
Julian Azaad and Nicolas Capogrosso, the team from Argentina that frightened the living daylights out of the Pool of the Death in Hamburg; Saxton/O’Gorman, Brouwer/Meeuwsen and Lucena/Dalhausser.
We told you it was deep.
Two teams who were in Hamburg are already out. Already out of what? You’re asking. Yes, step forward the country quota. It’s already swallowed Pedro Solberg and Vitor Felipe and Sarah Hughes and Summer Ross. Yes, the very same American team that reached the quarter-finals of the World Championships. Brutal.
Think the men’s was bad? Check the women’s! We’re not kidding!
Kelly Claes, Sarah Sponcil.
Maria Antonelli, Carol Solberg.
Ekaterina Birlova, Evgenia Ukolova.
Tina Graudina, Anastasija Kravcenoka.
Shall we stop now?
Talita and Taiana.
Laura Ludwig, Maggie Kozuch.
Victoria Bieneck, Isabel Schneider.
Ok, ok, we think you get the picture.
So, if you thought the beach volleyball world had stopped spinning after the madness of Hamburg, think again.
Tuesday’s gonna be ruthless, it’s gonna be cruel.
The battle is on. See you then.
