Merci Gstaad!

Memories of the fourth Major in the mountains

Teamwork makes the dream workTeamwork makes the dream work

We have the same feeling every year: the heart-wrenching sadness when we pack up and head home from the most beautiful beach volleyball tournament in the world.

The 2018 Swatch Major Gstaad was the fourth edition as part of the Beach Major Series family and once again the week of competition was one to remember.

History was made by the fearless beach volleyball Vikings, Anders Mol and Christian Sørum, who became the youngest ever winners of a Major event – the third youngest of all time – to a 20-year wait for a Norwegian gold on the World Tour.

There were also new names etched on women’s golden cowbell as Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan upgraded their bronze from last season to take the top prize.

But, as ever, the real heroes from the Swiss Alps were the volunteers, all 532 of them! Five hundred legends who raked sand, delivered balls, posted on social media, handed out tickets, fixed things or simply just smiled on a daily basis. Without you the Swatch Major Gstaad would not be the tournament it is.

So now attention turns to the A1 Major Vienna presented by Swatch. If last year’s World Championships are anything to go by we’re in for a treat!

But thank you Gstaad, thank you volunteers, thank you players and thank YOU, the fans!

What a week…see you next year, Gstaad – we can’t wait to hear the cowbells ringing again! Hopp Schwiiz!
