Medal rounds are set for the Swatch Beach Volleyball Major Series stop in Gstaad, Switzerland on Sunday afternoon, where the gold medal match will pit the new FIVB World Championship winners from Brazil against the reigning FIVB World Tour champs from Latvia.
It’ll be a battle of beach volleyball royalty as the inaugural Swatch Major Series comes to a close on Sunday afternoon. After topping the morning’s Semifinal standoffs, Brazil’s Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt and series newcomers Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins of Latvia will clash in the gold medal match. The Brazilians are the brand-new FIVB world champions, crowned on July 5 in The Hague, while the lionhearts from Latvia, bouncing back from Smedins’ knee surgery only weeks ago, have won the last two consecutive FIVB World Tour titles.
Leading up to that royal rivalry will be a bronze medal blitz between the two teams bested in the Semis, the Netherland’s Robert Meeuwsen and Alexander Brouwer and Italy’s Alex Ranghieri and Adrian Carambula. The classic cool of the powerful northern Europeans – who won the 2015 Poreč Major and were world champions themselves until dethroned a week ago – versus the emotion and unconventional play of the new Italian pair, who earned bronze at Poreč in only their second tournament together, will be a study in contrasts.
Medal rounds at the Gstaad Major start at 01:45 CET on Sunday, July 12, 2015.
