Stars dive in to Pool play

Over 50 matches will go down at the Swatch Beach Volleyball Major Series in Gstaad on Wednesday, July 8, with the top women’s teams in the sport making a splash in Pool play, while men work to earn a Main Draw spot through Qualifying matches.

It’ll take a full five courts to handle all the action. Among the highlights in the 6,000-seat Center Court at the heart of it all:

American men Nick Lucena and Theodore Brunner kick off the day in a match against home-country heroes Roman Sutter and Bernhard Beyeler of Switzerland in a do-or-die elimination match. By mid-morning, the women take the sand, when the underdog German team of Victoria Bieneck and Julia Grossner take on newly crowned world champions Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas.

At midday, it’s another German team, Karla Borger and Britta Büthe, facing Tanja Goricanec and Tanja Hüberli, one of five Swiss teams in the Center Court spotlight Wednesday, while in mid-afternoon the winners of the Porec Major, Larissa Franca and Talita Antunes, play against Yuanyuan Ma and Xinyi Xia. Just two matches later it’s American superstars Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross going up against Goricanec and Hüberli, and closing the Center Court action will be the eighth-seeded Swiss team of Nadine Zumkehr and Joana Heidrich versus the Polish team of Kinga Kolosinska and Monika Brzostek.

Battles on the sidecourts will be just as fierce, with Walsh Jennings and Ross, among other highly ranked teams, digging in. Sure to be entertaining on Court 3 will be the bronze  medalists from the Porec Major, Alex Ranghieri and Adrian Ignacio Carambula – the Italians who captured the hearts of the crowds with their emotional play and retro skyball serves.
