Europeans make their own little piece of Swatch Major Series history
Polish pair Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak sealed their place in their first ever Gstaad Major final with an outstanding 2-1 victory over Brazilians Alvaro Filho and Saymon Barbosa.
The two 25-year-olds, who were born just 11 days apart, came back from losing the first set to clinch a memorable victory and a place in their third international beach volleyball tournament of the season.
Now the duo just need to end their wait for a gold medal – their two final appearances have ended with silver medals – the last in Rio back in May.
Against Fort Lauderdale Major champions Alvaro and Saymon, the Poles lost the first set, going down 19-21. It was the first time the pair had dropped a set in the tournament.
But Kantor and Losiak soon hit back and won the second set by six points which took the semifinal to a deciding set. And that’s where the Europeans stepped up their game and secured a place in their first Swatch Majors final on Swiss soil.
The victory also guarantees Poland their first ever medal in Gstaad and the tandem will take on either Americans Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena or Evandro Goncalves and Andre Loyola in the grand finale.
