Poreč champs and Olympic gold medalists are out
There were two all-Brazilian clashes in the last 16 – and Poreč champions Pedro Solberg/Guto and Olympic gold medalists Alison/Bruno were the ones that DIDN’T make the quarterfinals.
Last year Evandro won gold with Pedro but the giant server, now playing with Andre Loyola, remains in with a chance of retaining the title having defeated his former partner in straight sets 21-18, 21-18.
Alison/Bruno meanwhile, who won bronze in Poreč last week and won gold here two years ago, were beaten by Fort Lauderdale Major winners Alvaro Filho/Saymon Barbosa.
In a 53-minute exhibition of brilliant beach volleyball, Alvaro and Saymon came through, winning 2-1 21-15, 17-21, 15-13.
Sadly, there was no space for a Swiss men’s team in Saturday evening’s last eight, as Nico Beeler and Marco Krattiger were beaten in straight sets by Polish Olympic pair Kantor/Losiak.
Also through to the quarterfinals are last year’s runners-up Lucena/Dalhausser of the United States and Russia’s Liamin/Krasilnikov of Russia, who beat Cuban duo Gonzalez/Diaz.
