Poreč and Olympic silver medalists make it through to the knockout rounds
A relieved Paolo Nicolai says the Gstaad Major starts now for him and teammate Daniele Lupo.
The Italian Poreč Major and Olympic silver medalists lost their first two pool play matches on Thursday and faced the real prospect of elimination before the knockout stages.
But the duo battled to a 2-1 win over American wildcards Trevor Gibb and Sean Rosenthal to get their names in the draw for Saturday’s knockout rounds - where they will play...Alison/Bruno - who they beat in Croatia on their way to silver!
“We’re not playing bad but we’re not playing great,” said Nicolai. “If you’re not in top condition you can lose every match – the difference between so many teams isn’t a lot.
“We’re out of the pool and that’s what matters – the tournament starts now and we’re trying to play better now.
“Of course we can medal – we just have to focus. We know how well we can play – we’ve shown that before. Who we play is not important.”
