Swiss stars storm into last eight
We’ve written about it all week.
No Swiss women’s team have ever won gold in Gstaad.
After last night’s heartbreaking defeat for Tanja Hüberli and Nina Betschart, the odds on that record coming to an end took a massive hit.
But the home fans have another set of heroes to cheer on, and on Center Court at 11am on Friday, they witnessed Anouk Vergé-Dépré and Joana Heidrich blitz up-and-coming American team Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes in straight sets to seal a place in the Gstaad Major quarterfinals.
In a devastating performance of beach volleyball the Swiss tandem recorded a brilliant 21-16, 21-16 victory to set up a last eight meeting with Brazilians Taiana Lima and Elize Maia. The South American qualifiers saw off Australians Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy in three sets and they meet the Swiss for a place in tomorrow’s semifinals.
Elsewhere on Friday morning, 2016 Poreč Major champions Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude booked their spot in the quarterfinals by beating Canadians Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson in straight sets.
The Germans will meet this year’s Poreč Major silver medalists Barbora Hermannová and Marketa Sluková after their win over Bieneck/Schneider.
