South Americans in control in the mountains
Fort Lauderdale Major champions Alvaro Filho and Saymon Barbosa want to avenge their disappointing 17th place in Poreč with a better result in the mountains.
The duo, who are the number one seeds at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships presented by A1, got their Gstaad Major off to the perfect start with a straight sets win over Switzerland’s Jonas Kissling and Alexei Strasser, taking just 36 minutes to triumph 21-17, 21-12.
“We sat down and talked after Poreč and we know we should have played better,” Saymon told us after their win on Center Court. “We need to be happy and play every game as it comes.”
Saymon was in superb form against their Swiss opponents, blocking a mighty six times to keep the home team at bay.
“Thanks to my teammate because he was awesome today,” said Alvaro. “It’s always difficult playing against the home team – I’ve known them for a long time but Saymon was siding-out, blocking and serving well.
“It was Brazilian weather too so it was perfect!”
