It’s win-win for Swiss on opening day of pool play
Oh my - what a shot @anoukvergedepre! 😱😎 #GstaadMajor @srfsport @FIVBVolleyball @FIVBBeach https://t.co/JjBp2WwCJz
It was a wonderful morning for two of the Swiss women’s teams who are out to achieve Gstaad Major glory on home sand this week.
No team from the host nation as ever won a golden cowbell on home sand but both Anouk Vergé-Dépré and Joana Heidrich and Tania Hüberli and Nina Betschart got their pool play matches off to a flyer with dramatic victories to delight of the Switzerland fans.
Vergé-Dépré and Heidrich’s game against American wildcards Kerri Walsh Jennings and Nicole Branagh was a fascinating spectacle. The Swiss girls took the first set and looked likely to take the second before the Americans hit back. Then, in a gripping deciding set, Anouk and Jo came out on top thanks to some stunning shots, including the back-hand from Anouk in the video above.
Many expected Hüberli and Betschart to steamroller Ukrainian sisters Inna and Iryna Makhno but the Swiss stars, who won bronze in Poreč, lost the first set to the 22-year-old qualifiers. With a real upset on the cards, Nina and Tanja upped their game and battled back to win the second and third sets.
Both teams will be eyeing back-to-back wins on the Center Court when they return for their second pool play match later on Wednesday.
Anouk and Jo face young Dutch duo Sinnema/Stubbe, while top seeds Hüberli/Betschart face Brazilians Taiana Lima/Elize Maia.
