Qualification victories for two of the American teams
The opening day of the Gstaad Major was one to savour for the two American teams playing on July 4 as both booked their spots in this week’s main draw.
Legendary veterans John Hyden, 44, and Ryan Doherty, 33, lost in qualification at the Poreč Major last week but there was no such problems in Gstaad. The Californians beat Englishmen Jake Sheaf and Chris Gregory in straight sets.
The pair join four other American men’s tandems in the main draw, including last year’s silver medalists Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena.
Meanwhile, in the women’s competition, Kim Dicello and Emily Stockman join the likes of Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross in the main draw after they battled to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Australians Nicole Laird and Jessyka Ngauamo.
The Aussies took the first set 21-19 but Dicello and Stockman stormed back to win the second easily, 21-11. It was tight again in the decider but Americans came out on the top in the end, winning 18-16.
