Country quota joy for Brazilians as they win again
Less than 24 hours after they were crowned Poreč Major champions, Pedro Solberg and Guto Carvalhaes qualified for the Gstaad Major after a mad dash to the Swiss Alps.
The pair hot-footed it straight after their gold medal triumph at the Red Bull Arena on Sunday night to get to Switzerland to take place in yet another country quota game.
They slept in Ljubljana overnight, caught two flights, going from Munich to Zurich, before arriving in the nick of time for their match against Vitor Felipe/George in Gstaad on Monday evening.
It was the third time the two teams have met in the country quota on the World Tour this year – including in Poreč – and Pedro and Guto claimed the first set 21-16.
Vitor Felipe and George levelled in the second set to take the match to a decider but the Poreč winners don’t know when they’re beaten. They won all nine of their matches on their way to winning our last tournament and they weren’t about to give up on Gstaad. In a nervy final they won their 10th Major Series match in a row to ensure they made the qualification tournament.
Following the draw for qualification, which begins on Tuesday, the Brazilians will face the winner of the first qualification round match between Austria’s Winter/Seidl and Dollinger/Erdmann of Germany.
Stay tuned on Tuesday for all the drama of qualification and don’t forget to watch all of the game live on BeachStream.
